Born and raised in Salt Lake City, John W Wood received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1974 and has shown work at Phillips Gallery for more than 40 years. John has been a practicing artist his whole adult life, living in many parts of the country; he now creates art in the Bay Area, where he resides with his husband of 10 years. 

John W Wood's gestural abstract work is created with layers of paint, pastels and crayons, and then scraped away with sticks and other tools. Each work is a conversation between himself and the marks he makes, as he listens to what they  tell him to do next. Many of his pieces, like Talking to Myself, evoke the vibrancy of the desert landscape of Utah.
