SARA SERRATOS
Fruits and Vegetables Stickers Sign

Sara Serratos is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist, educator, and curator based in Salt Lake City. Her work investigates landscape, housing, identity, migration, and systems of power, transforming familiar objects into reflections on surveillance, preservation, socio-environmental impact, and ancestral nourishment through photography, video, sculpture, performance, painting, and film. She holds an MFA from the University of Utah and a BFA from ENPEG “La Esmeralda” in Mexico City; her work has been exhibited in the U.S., Mexico, and online. Serratos is currently an Artist-in-Residence at UMOCA and serves as Exhibitions and Education Director at BDAC.

Fruits and Vegetables Stickers Sign is part of my body of work, Who Sustains Our Tables?, which reflects on the colonial legacies and ongoing exploitation in agricultural labor across the Americas. By scaling up labels, turning them into a sign, and emphasizing the names and origins of fruits and vegetables we get at the supermarkets, I draw attention to the people who sustain our source of nourishment—the ones who plant, tend, and harvest the food before it reaches our tables—and invite reflection on how fortunate we are to have access to these “entities,” which have traveled long distances to reach us.
